Aurora seen from Virginia during G3 Geomagnetic Storm
During the evening of September 18-19, a strong geomagnetic storm led to a greatly expanded auroral oval and observations of aurora from as far south as VIrginia. The activity was due to a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on the sun that occured days earlier. G3 and higher storms are relatively rare but are being seen more often as the current solar cycle intensifies.
